Montessori in Thailand
Education in Thailand is primarily overseen by the Ministry of Education.[1] The public education system is divided into three levels: six years of primary education (Pratom), three years of lower-secondary education (Mathayom), and three years of upper-secondary education (Mathayom). Schools following the Thai curriculum generally operate from May to March, with a break in April and a half-term break in October.[2] As a standard requirement in the Thai education system, students completing Pratom 3 and 6, as well as Mathayom 3 and 6, need to pass the Thai National Test (O-Net) to evaluate their knowledge and skills.[3]
The Montessori method, a child-centered educational approach emphasizing self-directed, hands-on learning and independence, was introduced to Thailand in the early 1990s[4] and has been embraced progressively by various educational institutions. These include public schools under the Office of Basic Education Commission (OBEC), private Thai and bilingual schools following the Thai curriculum, and private international schools following the Thai international curriculum.[5][6]
In 2004, a significant initiative - the Pilot Project for The Development of the Child's Potential in Small Government School using the Montessori Approach - was launched with the aim of integrating the Montessori approach into the Thai public education system.[7] Subsequently, the first AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) 3 to 6 Diploma Course was offered in Thailand in 2006.[8] This marked the advent of an array of diploma courses aimed at promoting Montessori education in Thailand."

History of Montessori Education in Thailand
The history of Montessori education in Thailand begins with the establishment of The Children's Center International (MCCI) in Pattaya Naklua in 1990, initiated by Dr. Wiravan Mootripakdee, also known as Miss Wee. After studying the Montessori approach in the United States, Miss Wee returned to Thailand and opened MCCI, which initially catered to 70 young students between the ages of 2 and 5.[9]
The first Montessori school in Bangkok, the International Montessori Center (IMC), was founded in 1991 by Mrs. Mariam Mahmood.[10]
The Rawai Progressive International Montessori School (RPIS) was established in Phuket in 1996 by Willem van Benthum.[11] The school, under the leadership of the AMI-approved German Montessori Teacher Andreas Becker, expanded from 80 to over 120 students Thai, bilingual, and international students aged 3 to 15 by December 2004 in only 8 months since he had joined the school as Educational Director in May of the same year.
Piti Suksa School, founded in Chiang Mai in 1998, was another important addition to the growing Montessori presence in Thailand.[12][13] It was established by proactive parents inspired by the Montessori Method, introduced to them by Willem van Benthum.
The influence of Maria Montessori's principles extends even further back, evidenced by the visit of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej to the École nouvelle de la Suisse romande (ENSR) during World War II.[14] ENSR, a member of the New Education movement, offers a kindergarten embracing the Montessori Method.
Montessori Education in Thailand
The landscape of education in Thailand has witnessed a noteworthy evolution with the introduction of Montessori methods, which provide a fresh perspective to the traditional pedagogical approach prevalent in the country. Offering a more child-centered and holistic model, Montessori schools in Thailand have emerged as a compelling alternative for parents seeking an enriching and inclusive environment for their children's education.
Montessori Approach
Montessori schools operate on the philosophy developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, focusing on fostering independent learning, self-discipline, and a genuine love for knowledge. This philosophy embraces the idea that children learn at their own pace, emphasizing the importance of providing a stimulating environment that caters to the child's individual developmental needs and interests. Unlike traditional Thai educational settings that often promote rote learning and uniformity, Montessori classrooms celebrate diversity and the child's natural curiosity.
Growth of Montessori Schools in Thailand
Montessori education made its foray into Thailand towards the late 20th century and has since seen steady growth. A rising number of Thai parents are recognizing the benefits of this educational approach, evident in the increasing number of Montessori schools springing up across the country, especially in urban areas. These schools range from smaller independent establishments to larger international schools that incorporate the Montessori philosophy as part of their curriculum.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the growing popularity, Montessori education in Thailand also faces challenges. The model's child-led approach contrasts with traditional Thai norms that emphasize adult authority, making it a paradigm shift for many. Also, a widespread understanding and acceptance of the Montessori method among educators and parents is still developing. However, these challenges also provide an opportunity for more discourse, understanding, and acceptance of alternative education models in Thailand.
Accreditation and Quality Assurance
Quality assurance is crucial for parents while selecting a Montessori school. Currently, several Montessori schools in Thailand are accredited by internationally recognized Montessori organizations such as the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) or the American Montessori Society (AMS). These schools meet strict quality criteria ensuring adherence to the authentic Montessori method.
Conclusion
Montessori education in Thailand provides an innovative and child-centered alternative to traditional schooling. As the nation moves towards an educational model that values individuality and holistic development, the Montessori philosophy could play a significant role in shaping the future of education in Thailand.
For scholars analyzing the educational landscape in Thailand, the rise and development of Montessori schools offer rich insights into the evolution of pedagogical strategies and cultural acceptance of global educational philosophies in the country.
Types of Schools in Thailand
Public Education and Montessori Integration in Thailand
Public education in Thailand is managed by the Ministry of Education and is divided into three levels: primary (Prathom 1-6), lower secondary (Mathayom 1-3), and upper secondary (Mathayom 4-6). Additionally, the country also runs vocational and technical schools.[15]
Thailand's national curriculum is based on a conventional education system, with a focus on academic knowledge, memorization, and standardized tests. However, in recent years, there has been a growing interest in integrating alternative education methods, such as the Montessori approach, into the public education system.
The Montessori method emphasizes self-directed learning, hands-on engagement, and the nurturing of a child's natural interests. Its principles are grounded in respect for the child's individuality and the development of their initiative and natural abilities, primarily through practical play.[16]
The integration of the Montessori approach into Thailand's public schools is a progressive step, albeit challenging due to the existing structure of the educational system. A number of schools have initiated efforts to adopt Montessori principles in their teaching methodologies. For example, Ban Chang Khoeng Samakee Wittayakhan School in the northern province of Chiang Mai has introduced Montessori principles in their primary level classes.[17][18] The school restructured their learning environment to be more child-centric, focusing on the individual needs and interests of each student.
Similarly, The Demonstration School of Chulalongkorn University has adopted elements of the Montessori approach. The school uses mixed-age classes, encourages students to work at their own pace, and incorporates hands-on activities.[19]
These initiatives demonstrate the potential for the integration of the Montessori method into Thailand's public education. It's important to note that full implementation of Montessori education in public schools would require significant changes to the curriculum, teacher training, classroom environments, and assessment methods. It also necessitates a shift in the mindset of educators, parents, and policymakers towards a more child-centric approach to education.
Private and International Education in Thailand: Integration of Montessori Principles
Private schools in Thailand encompass a broad range of institutions, including international schools, bilingual schools, religious schools, and independent private schools.[20] Many of these schools, especially international ones, follow curricula from other countries, such as the International Baccalaureate (IB), the British National Curriculum, the American Curriculum, or the Australian Curriculum.
A significant number of private schools in Thailand have integrated Montessori methods into their early education levels, especially kindergartens. For example, Mooltripakdee School in Pattaya has a dedicated Montessori kindergarten.[21] There are also schools that are entirely Montessori-based, such Montessori Academy Bangkok International School MABIS, which is one of the first internationally accredited Montessori schools in Thailand.[22][23]
Montessori principles are not as commonly used in primary and secondary levels in Thailand, however, a few accredited Montessori schools offer primary and some even secondary education. One such example is the Mukdahan Montessori School,[24] which offers Montessori education for children aged from 1.5 to 12 years.
While these private schools often follow international curricula, they still must align with the basic Thai educational framework and receive accreditation from the Thai Ministry of Education.[25] Schools are also required to teach Thai language and culture.
The school year in Thailand typically starts in mid-May and ends in March of the following year, with a long break from mid-March to mid-May and a short break in October.[26]
The difference between traditional Thai private schools and international schools mainly lies in the curriculum and language of instruction. Traditional Thai private schools follow the Thai national curriculum and teach in Thai, with English as a second language. International schools, on the other hand, usually follow a foreign curriculum (like the IB or British National Curriculum) and English is the primary language of instruction.
International schools often cater to expatriate families living in Thailand, as well as Thai families who want their children to receive a more globalized education. These schools often have more diverse student populations and offer a wider range of extracurricular activities and facilities. Fees for international schools are typically higher than traditional Thai private schools.
Homeschooling in Thailand: The Intersection of Montessori and UpSchool Education
The educational landscape in Thailand is experiencing a significant shift, with a rising number of parents electing to homeschool their children. Amidst a proliferation of Montessori schools, nurseries, and kindergartens, a growing contingent of parents are choosing to provide Montessori education within the home environment. This shift is largely attributed to the perception that some schools prioritize financial gain over strict adherence to Montessori philosophy. Furthermore, homeschooling appeals to families seeking to limit their children's exposure to digital screens and social media, a concern that aligns with Maria Montessori's Erdkinderplan (Earth Child Plan).
Homeschooling offers a unique educational experience, where children and parents are the architects of their own learning journey. They have the autonomy to determine what and when to learn, tailoring the educational experience to the individuality and interests of each child. This approach is deeply ingrained in the Montessori method, which promotes the development of a child's initiative and natural abilities, particularly through practical play.[27] The Erdkinderplan further underscores the importance of real-world, hands-on experiences, thus resonating with the homeschooling ethos.[28]
The Thai government has shown support for this alternative form of education by providing financial assistance to homeschooling families. This support alleviates the burden of costly school fees and liberates children from a one-size-fits-all educational model. To ensure the quality of homeschooling, Thai educational authorities conduct an annual evaluation to verify that all homeschooling criteria are met and that children are learning at an appropriate level.
In Phuket province, for example, the local Educational Department has shown considerable support for the homeschooling movement. Homeschooling families are given the opportunity to showcase their academic achievements and projects at an annual public presentation event.
A noteworthy aspect of homeschooling in Thailand is its approach to students with learning disabilities (LD), such as ADHD. The Montessori and UpSchool methods have shown to be particularly effective for these students. UpSchool, developed by Gavin McCormack and his team, presents an advanced, authentic Montessori-oriented approach.[29] McCormack, a former Montessori school director and founder of several Montessori training centers and schools in Nepal, has shaped UpSchool's mission to "provide purposeful education for a better tomorrow".[30]
In alignment with this mission, UpSchool has developed a 'Purposeful Learning Framework' (PLF), an educational philosophy that emphasizes intention-based learning.[31] UpSchool offers all its courses free of charge, and plans to launch a free teacher training program in 2023. This initiative aims to support the Sustainable Development Goals defined by UNESCO and address the global shortage of teachers, mirroring the efforts of Erika Frank with Next-Generation University (NextGenU.org) in the medical and nursing fields. UpSchoolPhuket[32] is developing a concept to make all materials and trainings available in Thai language, in conjunction with authentic Montessori-oriented training materials provided and certified as AME compliant by the Advanced Authentic Montessori Education (AME) group of educators, who advocate for Montessori for All, from infancy to adulthood.
The PLF aligns seamlessly with the homeschooling movement, as it empowers students to pursue their passions and develop at their own pace. This ensures that education is perceived as a journey of exploration, rather than a race to meet standard benchmarks, without imposing significant financial burdens.
UpSchool also aligns its curriculum with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing students with the opportunity to address real-world problems that align with their passions.[33] The platform is committed to providing free education for all children, reinforcing the belief that access to quality education should be a universal right.
In summary, homeschooling, with its emphasis on individuality and adaptability to each child's learning pace and interests, is gaining popularity in Thailand. By integrating the Montessori and UpSchool methods, homeschooling provides a nurturing environment for students to develop essential skills and attitudes. This empowers them to make significant contributions to their communities and the wider world.
Embracing Learning Freedom
Montessori Homeschool Centers, Groups, and Families in Thailand
In the heart of the beautiful and diverse country of Thailand, a distinctive educational movement flourishes. Parents, educators, and students gather in Montessori homeschool centers, groups, and families, fostering an enriching, personalized, and exploratory learning experience. As members of the official registered Thai homeschooling system, these vibrant communities take a unique approach to education, tailored to the rhythms of the learners themselves.
The homeschooling calendar in Thailand dances to its own beat, launching its annual journey in January and drawing to a close in November. December, aglow with holiday cheer, is reserved for relaxation and family time. The flexibility of homeschooling allows families to carve out their own half-term break, providing a well-deserved pause for rejuvenation.
While the Thai National Tests, known as the O-Net, form a key part of the assessment landscape for mainstream schools, their role in the homeschooling ecosystem is more fluid. Homeschooling families have the freedom to opt-in or out of these tests, adding another layer of flexibility to their educational journey.
To pave the way for this personalized learning adventure, Thai parents wishing to homeschool their children need to register with their respective provincial primary or secondary Education office. Navigating this process may reveal regional nuances, as in some provinces, such as the picturesque Phuket, the primary and secondary education offices are in different locations. For instance, while elementary students in Phuket register with the local Primary Education Office, secondary students' registration lies with the Phang Nga Secondary Education Office.
Amidst this homeschooling journey, a significant figure emerges – the Homeschool "Leader". This individual, who must have completed at least the Secondary Grade Final Exam (Mathayom 6), guides the homeschooling process and ensures a structured, enriching educational experience.
Recognizing the immense dedication and resources that homeschooling involves, the Thai Government lends a helping hand by providing financial support to homeschooling families on a per-school-term basis.
In recognition of the commitment and resources required for homeschooling, the Thai Government extends its support by providing financial aid to homeschooling families. This assistance, rendered on a per-school-term basis, underscores the government's recognition of homeschooling as a valid and valued pathway in the nation's educational landscape. It also acknowledges the shared responsibility in shaping the minds of future generations.
This financial aid helps alleviate some of the costs associated with homeschooling, such as educational materials, activity fees, and other related expenses. By doing so, it ensures that all families, regardless of their financial status, have the opportunity to choose homeschooling if it best suits their children's learning needs and styles.
While regulations stipulate that foreigners cannot assume the role of Homeschool Leaders, they are warmly welcomed to contribute their skills and expertise as teachers. This policy allows a wealth of diverse perspectives to enrich the learning experience of homeschool students, offering them a truly global classroom within their own homes1.
Thai School Year: Differences and Details
In Thailand, the structure of the academic year varies depending on the type of school and the curriculum it follows.
Thai National and Thai Bilingual Curriculum Schools: Both public and private schools adhering to the Thai National and Thai Bilingual curricula typically commence their academic year in May and conclude in March of the following year.[34] They incorporate a mid-term break around October that usually lasts 3–4 weeks.[35]
Thai International Curriculum Schools: Public and private schools following the Thai International Curriculum begin their school year in August and end in June of the subsequent year.[36] They observe a 3-week winter break around Christmas, along with a 2-week Easter break.[37]
Regardless of the curriculum, all Thai schools are required to participate in the Ordinary National Education Test (O-Net), a standardized examination administered to students in Prathom (Primary) 3 and 6, and Mathayom (Secondary) 3 and 6.[38] This test typically takes place in February/March.[39]
Homeschooling in Thailand: Those who opt for homeschooling follow a different schedule. Their academic year aligns with the calendar year, beginning in January.[40] At the end of November, education department officials conduct an evaluation of the students. Each student must present a detailed report of their academic activities for the year.[41] The officials then determine whether the student is ready to progress to the next grade.[42]
The Development of Montessori Schools in Eastern Thailand
Eastern Thailand, also known as the Eastern Region, is a geographical area of Thailand that includes the provinces of Chanthaburi, Chonburi, Rayong, Trat, and others. This region is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from bustling cities to serene beaches and lush forests. In recent years, Eastern Thailand has been the focus of significant developmental efforts by the Thai government, leading to a surge in infrastructure and economic growth. It is witnessing an increasing need for a robust educational infrastructure. Both the government and private sector have recognized this need, investing in the establishment of new schools across the region. Montessori schools, known for their innovative and child-centered approach to education, are particularly well-positioned to thrive in this environment. The influx of technology companies in the region aligns well with the Montessori emphasis on creativity, problem-solving, and independent thinking. Montessori schools, known for their innovative and child-centered approach to education, are particularly well-positioned to thrive in this environment.
The Thai government has invested heavily in the development of this region, with projects including the construction of new cities, motorways, and a fast railway system. These developments have been instrumental in attracting new businesses to the area, particularly within the technology sector. As a result, the region is projected to experience substantial growth in the coming years.
Schools in Eastern Thailand
The development of educational infrastructure in Eastern Thailand is not only a response to growth but also a catalyst for further development. The establishment of new schools will attract families to the area, contribute to the local economy, and help cultivate a well-educated workforce that can support the region's burgeoning tech industry.
The Montessori method, developed by Maria Montessori, the first female medical doctor in Italy, has been influential in shaping early childhood education globally. Montessori education emphasizes that every child is unique; therefore, education should be individualized, and respect for the child needs to be adopted as the most important principle. Montessori schools have free, supportive environments for children to do their own chores. Daycare centers primarily offer activities of daily living where the child can try them out on their own to learn.
The child's ability to observe and explore plays a role in their learning. The child, who is completely busy shaping their own personality before the age of 2.5 years, does not even play with their peers. Yet, they love to be in the environment and socialize by the age of 2.5-3 years5. Montessori emphasizes the importance of teaching children the words about facts, geometric objects, geography, animals, and plants.
In the context of Eastern Thailand, the Montessori method, with its emphasis on individualized learning, respect for the child, and the importance of self-directed activities, could be particularly beneficial. As the region continues to attract technology companies, the demand for a well-educated, innovative, and creative workforce will increase. Montessori education, with its focus on developing the whole child and fostering a love of learning, could help meet this demand.
Based on the full text of the paper "An Examination of Middle School Organizational Structures in the United States and Australia",[43] it is clear that the concept of middle school, which includes Montessori schools, is aimed at creating a more developmentally responsive learning environment for young adolescents. This is achieved through the holistic implementation of six key characteristics:
- A challenging, integrative, and exploratory curriculum
- Varied teaching and learning approaches
- Assessment and evaluation that promote learning
- Flexible organizational structures (including the physical space, scheduling, and grouping of students and teachers)
- Programs and policies that foster health, wellness, and safety
- Comprehensive guidance and support services
These characteristics align well with the needs of a technology-driven area like the Eastern Seaboard and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) in Thailand. The influx of technology companies in these regions, including those from the car and aerospace industries as well as new technologies like IoT and AI, necessitates an educational approach that fosters creativity, problem-solving, and independent thinking. These are all hallmarks of a Montessori education.
Montessori Education, a reason for success
Based on the full text of the paper "Montessori Education: an expert view", Maria Montessori's educational approach has been influential in shaping early childhood education. Montessori, the first female medical doctor in Italy, devoted her life to improving the education system for children. Her method, which dates back to the early 19th century, is adopted within both private and public schools globally.[44]
Montessori education emphasizes that every child is unique; therefore, education should be individualized, and respect for the child needs to be adopted as the most important principle. The child should be allowed to do their own work and learn by themselves.
Montessori schools have free, supportive environments for children to do their own chores. Daycare centers primarily offer activities of daily living where the child can try them out on their own to learn.[45]
The child's ability to observe and explore plays a role in their learning. The child, who is completely busy shaping their own personality before the age of 2.5 years, does not even play with their peers. Yet, they love to be in the environment and socialize by the age of 2.5–3 years.[46]
Montessori emphasizes the importance of teaching children the words about facts, geometric objects, geography, animals, and plants. The previous research documented that a 3.5-year-old child can learn the above-mentioned concepts more easily than a 5-year-old child.
In the context of Eastern Thailand, the Montessori method, with its emphasis on individualized learning, respect for the child, and the importance of self-directed activities, could be particularly beneficial. As the region continues to attract technology companies, the demand for a well-educated, innovative, and creative workforce will increase. Montessori education, with its focus on developing the whole child and fostering a love of learning, could help meet this demand.[47]
Moreover, the establishment of Montessori schools could contribute to the overall development of the region. Schools are not just places of learning; they are also community hubs, sources of employment, and drivers of local economies. By attracting families to the area and contributing to the local economy, these schools could play a role in the ongoing development of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).[48]
The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is a significant development project in Thailand, aiming to transform the region into a leading hub for technological and economic activity.[49] The EEC's focus on high-tech industries could lead to significant economic growth and job creation in the region.[50][51]
This development is likely to increase the demand for highly skilled workers, which could drive changes in Thailand's education system.[52] In this context, Montessori education, with its emphasis on self-directed learning, creativity, and problem-solving, could be particularly beneficial.
The establishment of new Montessori schools in the EEC could help meet the demand for a well-educated workforce. Moreover, the conversion of existing schools to follow the Montessori approach could further enhance the region's educational infrastructure.[53]
However, it's important to note that while these conclusions are based on the principles of Montessori education and the known details of the EEC's development, specific research on the impact of Montessori schools in the EEC or similar regions is limited. Further research would be needed to draw more specific conclusions.

The Development of Montessori Schools in Northern Thailand
Willem van Benthum, the founder of the Montessori Learning Center in Rawai, was a significant figure in the establishment and spread of Montessori education in Thailand. He was instrumental in running the Rawai Progressive School, which served as the starting point for Montessori education not only in Phuket but also in Chiang Rai. His interactions with parents in these areas were so inspiring that they led to the establishment of the Pitisuksa Montessori School (Chiang Rai).

The Development of Montessori Schools in Phuket
In 2004, van Benthum sold the Montessori school in Rawai to a parent who continues to run the school to this day. Following the sale, van Benthum relocated to the Northern Region. That same year, before the devastating tsunami hit the island, the new owner of the Rawai Progressive School organized a training program for professors and teachers at Rajabhat University. Over the subsequent years, the demonstration school of Rajabhat University Phuket acquired several complete Montessori material sets and began teaching the Montessori method. However, the project was short-lived due to the lack of a qualified teacher with a Montessori certificate.
Stuart Nuth, a relative newcomer to the Montessori education system, founded a Montessori kindergarten in Vichit, Phuket, nearly two decades after his introduction to the method. In October 2022, Nuth discovered an unoccupied kindergarten building and an Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) trained teacher. With the support of Andi Becker, a former educational director of the Rawai Progressive School in 2004 and a long-term resident of the island, the kindergarten experienced rapid growth. Within a mere three months, the student body expanded from none to almost its full capacity of 40 students. During this period, the institution also garnered close to 20 five-star reviews.
Nuth adheres strictly to the authentic Montessori approach, which includes a strong emphasis on proper work ethics and legal compliance too. This includes ensuring that all operations are appropriately licensed by the Thai government. The process of obtaining a license in Thailand can be arduous and time-consuming, leading some establishments to attempt to bypass these legal requirements. However, it is highly recommended that kindergartens in Thailand are fully licensed and that their staff are not only qualified but also receive regular and good payment. Any deviation from these legal and ethical standards could potentially tarnish the reputation of all Montessori schools.
In Cherngtaley, the Greenhouse Kindergarten[96] has been implementing the Montessori method since 2018 under highly qualified Thai leadership. Meanwhile, in Rawai, Kim Kilgore, another former educational director of the Rawai Progressive School, started "Scholars Of Unity and Light" (S.O.U.L)[97] - a heavily Montessori-inspired learning center for students aged 3–15y.
The educational scene in Phuket appears to be thriving once more, with the emergence of three new authentic Montessori initiatives and the rapidly expanding UpSchool[98][99] Phuket initiative, which is also based on the Montessori Method and caters to homeschoolers. These initiatives are inspiring others to establish Montessori nurseries for children aged 1–3 years, as well as kindergartens and schools. Ruamrudee School[100] in Bangkok, which adheres to the Emilio Reggio Montessori approach, is also planning to open a new kindergarten in Phuket, close to the former zoo. It remains to be seen whether Phuket Island will transform into a major ASEAN hub for advanced, authentic Montessori educational practices and environments that prepares students and train teachers with an Education for the New World.

The Development of Montessori in Public Schools of Thailand
While the Montessori movement that originated from Phuket was primarily focused on private Montessori schools, another initiative aimed at introducing Montessori education to public schools in Thailand gained momentum after the International Montessori Congress 2005 in Sydney. A team of Thai officials, led by Kannekar Butt, attended the conference, which led to the establishment of the Montessori Association of Thailand (MAT). Following this, AMI Australia initiated their first teacher training programs in Khon Kaen, Thailand. Over time, numerous courses were conducted, and many public schools, particularly public kindergartens for ages 3–6, adopted the Montessori method.[161]
The Association of Montessori Schools Thailand (TAMS) was established on July 11, 2003, by Mrs. Khamkaew Kraisornpong, the administrator of Kornkaew Kindergarten School. The association was created to disseminate ideas, methods, teaching management, and information about Montessori teaching and learning.[162]
The association's objectives include:
Serving as a center for exchanging knowledge, opinions, experiences, and disseminating news and information between schools that offer instruction in the Montessori system. Promoting and developing Montessori teaching and learning management. Cooperating and coordinating with private organizations and the Ministry of Education in organizing training and activities about teaching in the Montessori system. Studying and researching the development of schools that use the Montessori teaching system. Coordinating benefits between private organizations both domestically and internationally.
Honorary Advisor Khunying Boonluen Krua Trachu, former Director-General of the Department of General Education, emphasized the importance of the Montessori method in fostering the development of children. She noted that children's needs and characteristics at different stages of development are crucial in creating an environment for children to learn according to their potential.[163]
Secretary of the Board of Directors of Basic Education, Khunying Kasama Worawan Na Aythuya, expressed her admiration for the Montessori method, which has been respected for nearly a century. She noted that it is gratifying to see that in Thailand, there are numerous schools where these principles can be developed in various contexts to great benefit for Thai education.[164]
In 2008, the first Montessori conference of Thailand took place in Bangkok. The opening ceremony was held by AMI President Mr. Philip O'Brien, who visited Thailand in January 2015. The Montessori Association of Thailand is honored to be hosting the 29th International Montessori Congress, which will take place from August 2–5, 2023, at the Queen Sirikit Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand.[165]
Public Montessori Schools and how it begann
The Evolution and Impact of Montessori Education Public Schools in Thailand: A Historical Perspective
The demographic shift in developing nations often leads to urban migration, with families leaving rural areas in search of better opportunities in cities. This phenomenon was also observed in Thailand, leading to a significant decrease in the number of students in rural schools. The dwindling student population posed a threat to the survival of these schools, prompting the Thai Education Ministry to seek innovative solutions to sustain rural education.[166]
The traditional model of education, with one teacher instructing a small group of students, was proving inefficient in these rural schools. The Secretary General of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC), Khun Ying Dr Kasama Vorawan, proposed a radical shift in pedagogy and school structure to breathe new life into the declining rural education sector.[167]
In 2004, the Montessori method of education was introduced as a potential solution. This pedagogical approach, which emphasizes multi-age classrooms, was implemented in a pilot project in the Nakorn Pathom Education Service Area One, under the guidance of Dr Kannekar Butt, the honorary Montessori field coordinator, and with the cooperation of the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI).[168]
The pilot project was a resounding success, demonstrating that students in multi-age classrooms could achieve strong academic and social skills. The project also revealed an increase in students' self-reliance, self-esteem, self-discipline, and a heightened level of concentration and interest in learning. The success of the pilot project led to the expansion of Montessori education in 16 additional schools in the province.[169]
To manage this expansion, several structures were established. The Montessori Association of Thailand (MAT) was founded in 2006 to promote the development of Thai children of all ages. A teacher training program was initiated in collaboration with OBEC and AMI. To ensure the maintenance of quality practices, a Framework of Cooperation was created and approved by the Permanent Secretary of Education, Dr Jaruyporn Thoranin.[170]
The objectives of the agreement were to expand the accessibility of Montessori education for Thai children and to provide a high standard of Montessori teacher training and professional development. Since then, more than 1100 government teachers, school directors, and supervisors have participated in AMI training courses.[171]
Over the past two decades, Montessori education has seen steady growth in both the public and private sectors in Thailand, despite various challenges. The Australian Thai Montessori Support group (ATMS) has played a significant role in supporting the professional development of Thai educators.[172]
The growth of the Montessori network community in Thailand is a testament to the commitment, dedication, and unity of its members. This article acknowledges the individual perseverance and devotion that have contributed to the remarkable embrace of Montessori education on a national scale.[173]
